Electrical discharge wire cutting (wire-walking) is an electrothermal production process that uses electrical discharge to remove material from the workpiece. This improved version of traditional EDM methods is compatible with nearly all conductive materials and can produce complex designs and shapes.
Wire cutting is a non-contact reduction manufacturing process that uses charged fine wires and dielectric fluids to shape metal parts. This versatile precision machining process is ideal for manufacturing complex geometries, particularly in industries requiring strict tolerances like aerospace and medical.
Excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. Requires proper operation to avoid gelatinous buildup during processing.
Well suited for EDM machining but requires deionized water as a medium to control heat generation.
Requires heat management during processing but excellent for complex features.
High tensile strength but requires slower cutting speeds due to its soft nature.
Besides Wire EDM, there are drilling EDM (using tubular electrodes for finer holes) and sink hole EDM (using shaped conductive metal electrodes).
Laser cutting uses a high-power thermal beam while wire-cut EDM uses electrical processing with a wire electrode.
Deionized water serves as an effective coolant with low carbon properties to regulate dielectric temperature.
